About Question Groups
Question Groups let you organize related survey questions into blocks and control how those questions are shown to panelists.
You can use Question Groups to:
Keep related questions together.
Randomize the order of questions within a group.
Randomize entire groups of questions using nested Question Groups.
Apply questionnaire logic to a group of questions.
Question Groups are especially helpful when you want to vary the order in which panelists see individual questions or sets of questions while keeping related content together.
Randomization Options in Questionnaire Builder
Within an In-Platform Survey, there are several ways to randomize content depending on what you’d like to accomplish.
If you want to… | Use… |
Change the order of answer options within a single question | Answer Option Randomization |
Change the order of individual questions | Randomize Question Order within a Question Group |
Keep related questions together but change which set appears first | Nested Question Groups + Randomization |
Good to Know: Creating a Question Group does not automatically enable randomization. You’ll need to turn on randomization for the questions or groups you’d like to randomize.
Creating a Question Group
Question Groups are created directly from the Questionnaire Builder.
To create a Question Group:
Step 1: Click the ellipses (...) next to the question you want to include in the group
Step 2: Select Add to Question Group
A new Question Group will be created containing that question. From here, you can rename the group and configure its settings.
Add Questions to a Question Group
Once the Question Group is created, you can add additional questions to it.
Step 1: Click the ellipses (...) next to the question you’d like to add.
Step 2: Select Move to Question Group
Step 3: Choose the Question Group you’d like to move the question into
Step 4: Repeat these steps for any additional questions you’d like to include
Questions within a Question Group stay together as a block. When you move a question into a group, its position in the questionnaire may change so that it appears alongside the other questions in that group.
Pro Tip: Rename your Question Groups as you create them to make it easier to identify and organize related questions in your questionnaire.
Managing a Question Group
Once your questions are grouped, use the Question Group controls to customize how the Question Group behaves.
Option | What It Does |
Rename Group | Change the Question Group name to make it easier to identify in the questionnaire builder |
Randomize Question Order | Show the questions within the group in a different order across panelists |
Question Group Logic | Apply display or disqualification logic to an entire Question Group |
Move Group | Drag and drop the Question Group to change its position in the questionnaire |
Copy Group | Duplicate the Question Group and the questions within it |
Delete Group | Remove the Question Group. This does not remove the question from the questionnaire. |
Randomize Questions Within a Group
Once you’ve added questions to a Question Group, turn on Randomize Question Order to vary the order in which panelists see those questions.
For example, a group might contain:
Q2 → Q3 → Q4 → Q5
Possible Panelist Experience
Q4 → Q2 → Q5 → Q2
Each panelist sees the questions in a randomized order, while all questions remain within the same Question Group.
Pro Tip: Randomizing questions within a group changes the order of individual questions. If you'd like to randomize multiple Question Groups while keeping the questions within each group together, use nested Question Groups.
Add Question Group Logic
Use Question Group Logic to control when a Question Group is displayed or to disqualify panelists based on their responses.
From the Question Group menu, select Question Group Logic and choose the type of logic you’d like to apply:
Display Logic: Show the Question Group only when panelists meet the criteria you define
Disqualify Panelists: Disqualify panelists based on the criteria you define. Disqualification logic is restricted to the first two survey questions.
Watchout: Be mindful of questionnaire logic when moving or randomizing Question Groups. If a group depends on responses to earlier questions, make sure those questions will always appear before the group they're controlling.
Randomize Question Groups via Nested Question Groups
To randomize multiple sets of related questions while keeping each set together, use Nested Question Groups.
Step 1: Create the individual Question Groups you’d like to randomize.
Step 2: Add those groups to a new parent Question Group.
Step 3: Turn on Randomize Question Order for the parent group.
This allows the individual Question Groups to appear in a randomized order while keeping the questions within each group together.
Example: Comparing Retailer Experiences
Imagine you want to survey panelists about their experiences at Walmart, Target, and Amazon. You can create three Question Groups, each containing questions about that retailer’s assortment, return policy, and overall shopping experience. Then, by nesting these groups within a randomized parent Question Group, you can vary the order in which panelists evaluate the retailers.
Programmed order
Intro → Walmart Question Group → Target Question Group → Amazon Question Group → Final Questions
Possible panelist order
Intro → Amazon Question Group → Walmart Question Group → Target Question Group → Final Questions
The questions within each retailer group stay together, but the order of the groups changes across panelists. You can also randomize the questions within each individual group if you’d like to vary their order.
Pro Tip: If you want to keep the questions within each group in a specific order, leave randomization turned off for the individual groups and enable it only on the parent Question Group.
Preview Your Randomized Questionnaire
Before launching, use Survey Preview to review how your Question Groups and randomization settings appear to panelists.
As you preview, check that:
Related questions stay together within their groups.
Randomized questions and Question Groups appear in different sequences.
Any pinned questions remain in their intended positions.
Questionnaire logic works as expected across different question orders.
The overall survey flow makes sense from the panelist's perspective.
Question Groups Considerations
Group first, then randomize: Creating a Question Group does not automatically randomize its questions or nested groups.
Keep related questions together: Questions within a group stay together, even when the group is randomized within a parent group.
Be mindful of questionnaire logic: Questions or groups that depend on earlier responses should not be randomized into positions where those responses may not yet exist.
Consider the panelist experience: Randomizing questions can help reduce order bias, but not every question needs to be randomized. Keep questions in a fixed order when their sequence is important.
Preview multiple paths: Restart Survey Preview to test different question and group orders, especially when your questionnaire includes logic.
Randomization Order Reporting: The order in which individual panelists viewed randomized Question Groups is not currently available in the survey results.
